Malcolm Gamble, longtime Citizen Times photojournalist, dies at 98

ASHEVILLE - Hebert Malcolm Gamble, an Asheville native who spent his career as an award-winning staff photographer for the Citizen Times, died Oct. 19. He was 98.

Known as Malcolm, Gamble, started as a copy boy at the Asheville Citizen and the Asheville Times in 1937 (the newspapers were competitors at the time). His salary was set at $7 a week and his first tasks involved mixing the chemicals needed to produce finished images. Gamble soon became a reporter and then a photographer.
